Abstract: Smart cities are powered by the ability to self-monitor and respond to signals and data feeds from heterogeneous physical sensors. As part of this network of physical sensors are the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications to allow elderly, sick and disabled people to stay safely at home while assisted by their family and medical staff. By hiding technology into light fixtures, in this paper we propose AmbLEDs, an ambient sensing system, as an alternative to spreading sensors that are perceived as invasive, such as cameras, microphones, microcontrollers, tags or wearables, in order to create a ubiquitous collaborative system for recognizing, informing and alerting home environmental changes and human activities to support a sustainable proactive care.
